Carlos overhears a group of soldiers making their way through the jungle and realizes that they are also trying to find their way up the mountain toward his grandmother’s village. On his way to warn his grandmother, he meets a small group of rebels who are also heading up the mountain to a rebel base. As he travels with them, he wrestles with his feelings about growing up and becoming a man.

The text of Caminar takes full advantage of the space on the page, never repeating the same layout for two sequential poems. For example, as Carlos travels through the jungle, the words “I walked” make their way down the center column. His fears for his mother’s safety and his doubts about leaving the village are spread into the left and right margins.[10] There are also some excellent examples of concrete poetry. In the poem MARIPOSAS, Carlos is looking back toward the village, and the text drifts from left to right. Then a “CRASH” draws his attention back toward the mountains, illustrated by text drifting from right to left. Butterflies are startled into flight by the sound, and the drifting text takes on the shape of butterfly wings, with the word “butterflies” delineating the abdomen.[11]
